Nov 25, 2024 December 2024: The Joy of Giving

Woman giving a gift

At this time of year we embrace the saying, “It is better to give than receive.” T’is the season of giving to friends, family and charities. While shopping and wrapping can be a chore, the joy we get when those gifts are opened is always gratifying. So is it really better to give?

A University of Chicago study has proven that the happiness we get from giving endures with each gift we give, but the
happiness from receiving diminishes with each gift we get.

Science has also shown the benefits of giving, including greater self-esteem and satisfaction with life, with a lower risk of depression. When you give, your brain releases “feel good” chemicals that help to improve your physical health, including lowering your blood pressure, cortisol levels, and stress, contributing to a longer lifespan.

Giving doesn’t have to empty your wallet. Try Giving On A Budget and get a “Helper’s High.”

Giving On A Budget

Sometimes the most appreciated gifts don’t come from a store. Here are a few ways to give without breaking the bank:

1. Walk a neighbor’s dog.

2. Do a housemate’s chores.

3. Help a tech-challenged relative with a phone, computer, or TV.

4. Use your talents. Cook a meal, bake, or draw a picture for someone.

5. Smile! It may be the only one someone receives today.
