Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Somerset (RWJUH Somerset), an RWJBarnabas Health facility, is recognized by Becker’s Hospital Review’s “153 Great Community Hospitals" for 2023. The community hospitals included on this prestigious list are lauded for their clinical excellence, compassionate care and economic impact on their communities.
In selecting RWJUH Somerset for the Great Community Hospitals list, Becker’s highlighted the hospital’s specialized primary care services for the LGBTQ+ community, eating disorders program, patient navigation services for Indian, Chinese and Hispanic patients and its 76,000-square-foot expansion project.
“As a community hospital serving the Central New Jersey region for nearly 125 years, we remain steadfast in our commitment to providing the highest quality health care services to our community close to home,” said Patrick Delaney, Chief Administrative Officer, RWJUH Somerset. “We are honored to receive national recognition for the exceptional care our team provides to our community.”
RWJUH Somerset was the first in New Jersey to offer primary care services for the LGBTQ+ community when it opened the Babs Siperstein PROUD Center on its campus in 2017. Its services for ages 18 and older include primary medical care, HIV prevention and care, hormone therapy and monitoring, wellness visits, behavioral health therapy, health education, support groups and patient navigation services.
It is one of only two hospitals in New Jersey to offer a dedicated inpatient unit for eating disorders, treating patients age 14 and older for conditions such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorders. The hospital recently completed renovations to its inpatient eating disorders unit, expanding its capacity from 14 to 20 beds and including separate spaces for adolescent and adult patients. It also offers outpatient and partial hospitalization for eating disorders patients.
RWJUH Somerset’s Steeplechase Cancer Center, together with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, offers a full range of outpatient services, including mammography, radiation oncology, infusion therapy, lung cancer screening, clinical research studies, patient navigation services, nutritional counseling and support services.
Its Indian, Chinese and Hispanic Medical Programs help members of the Indian, Chinese and Hispanic communities with arrangements for round-trip transportation for medical appointments; finding medical specialists; filling out forms; interpretation and translation.
RWJUH Somerset is half-way through construction of its two-story vertical expansion which will house a new 35-bed Orthopedic Center of Excellence, with all private rooms, and a rehabilitation gym as well as a 10-bed Rapid Decision Unit for Emergency Department patients. The largest construction project on the hospital campus in 16 years, the project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2024.
