Joseph Koziol, MD, has been named Chair of Neurosurgery at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) in Livingston, formerly known as Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Dr. Koziol has been an attending physician at CBMC for almost 30 years.
“Over the past several years, the Neurosurgery Department has grown in the complexity and volume of cases with 60 neurosurgeons on staff,” says Richard Davis, President and CEO, CBMC. “Dr. Koziol’s deep understanding of the Department, coupled with his vision and expertise will continue the department’s growth and enhance the delivery of advanced neurological care for adults and children in our community.”
“Along with Dr. Koziol’s clinical expertise, he is a passionate teacher, guiding the next generation of neurosurgeons,” says Gregory Rokosz, DO, JD, Chief Medical Officer, CBMC. “As an institutional leader for the CBMC Neurosurgery residency program, Dr. Koziol continues to support and mentor our residents in the fields of general neurosurgery, endovascular neurosurgery as well as epilepsy, functional, brain tumor and complex spine surgery.”
Dr. Koziol graduated from Georgetown University in 1979 and received his medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. During his general surgery residency, Dr. Koziol performed research on hemorrhagic shock. After falling in love with neurosurgery, he was asked to be the first resident in the newly-approved neurological surgery residency program at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School which started in 1988. Dr. Koziol completed his residency there in 1992 and has been on staff at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center ever since.
Active in neurosurgical education, Dr. Koziol is the Associate Program Director of the Neurosurgery Residency program at CBMC. His clinical interests include adult degenerative spine and oncologic spine reconstruction, as well as peripheral nerve and brain tumor surgery.
