The Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (CBMC) in Livingston, New Jersey has once again performed more kidney transplants than any center in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. During 2021, the team completed 348 kidney transplants. With this volume, CBMC was the largest kidney transplant center in the Northeast and one of the top kidney transplant programs in the country. In addition, CBMC was the fourth largest living donor kidney transplant program in the U.S., performing 131 kidney transplants from living donors.
In 2021, the CBMC transplant program continued to perform deceased donor transplants, performing 217 such transplants – the most deceased donor transplants ever in one year in the program’s history. In addition to this record-breaking volume, the transplant program continues to have excellent long-term transplant outcomes.
“Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center has one of the largest and most innovative transplant centers in the nation,” says Francis L. Weng, MD, MSCE, Chief of Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division, CBMC. “We continuously advocate for patients and participate in the newest research and surgical options to offer a comprehensive array of options that are available at only a few other leading transplant centers.”
CBMC’s Living Donor Institute has unique expertise in facilitating kidney-paired donations and donation chains. The Living Donor Institute – New Jersey’s first and only living donor institute – enables the matching and exchange of kidneys between incompatible donor/recipient pairs so that all recipients receive a compatible transplant. In addition, the Renal and Pancreas Transplant Division’s Compatible Share program allows compatible pairs to participate in paired donations in order to provide a benefit to the pair through improved living donor matching.
