May 16 marks the beginning of National EMS Week. But what is EMS? EMS stands for Emergency Medical Services, a system that provides emergency medical care.

EMS providers work alongside law enforcement and fire services; however, their primary purpose is to provide emergency medical services in all situations, from minor injuries to significant, multi-patient accidents. For more information about what EMS is, visit www.ems.gov.

During COVID-19, EMS responders put themselves at risk to serve their community and often are the unsung heroes of the medical field. This week gives us a great opportunity to show our appreciation for our community’s EMS providers.

What can we do as a community to better assist EMS at any time? Dr. Lasanta Horana, MD, FACEP, Chair and Medical Director, Department of Emergency Services, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, suggests, “It is helpful when you call EMS if the patient or family can provide medical history, medication list and contacts for their doctors to help EMS and the hospital provide better care downstream. I would recommend all patients have this information pre-written and easily accessible to assist in this process.”

Dr. Horana adds, “It is with respect and admiration that we applaud our EMS colleagues during this week. They provide acute care to patients in their greatest time of need in incredibly challenging circumstances. We appreciate the collaborative relationship we have with EMS to provide the best care to our community. Thank you for all that you do every day!”
