West Orange, NJ, July 31, 2020 – Monmouth Medical Center and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, two RWJBarnabas Health facilities, have been named to Newsweek’s 2020 list of Best Maternity Care Hospitals. The distinction recognizes facilities that have excelled in providing care to mothers, newborns and their families, as verified by the 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Survey. Best Maternity Care Hospitals is part of Newsweek’s Best Health Care series, powered by data from The Leapfrog Group.

“This spring, MMC was awarded its 11th consecutive ‘A’ Hospital Safety Score rating by the Leapfrog Group, and we are honored to receive this additional Leapfrog recognition of our quality outcomes for maternity patients,” said Eric Carney, President and CEO of Monmouth Medical Center. “As a high reliability organization, we understand that what matters most to our patients is safe, effective care and remain committed to the highest quality care and patient safety for mothers and babies.”

“This recognition, coupled with Newark Beth Israel Medical Center’s second consecutive Newsweek World’s Best Hospital- USA designation and our Leapfrog ‘A’ safety score, further demonstrates our commitment to high reliability, patient safety and quality care,” said Darrell K. Terry, Sr., President and Chief Executive Officer of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey. “Newark Beth Israel is committed to delivering world class clinical care and an excellent patient experience to all of our patients and their families.”

Hospitals named as Best Maternity Care Hospitals have fully met The Leapfrog Group’s standards for maternity care on evidence-based, nationally standardized metrics. This includes lower rates of early elective delivery, NTSV C-section, and episiotomy, as well as compliance with process measures including newborn bilirubin screening prior to discharge and blood clot prevention techniques for mothers delivering via C-section.

“Monmouth Medical Center is far and away the first choice of expectant parents in Monmouth and Ocean counties, delivering nearly 6,000 babies annually,” says Robert Graebe, MD, Chairman and Program Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology. “We have built one of the safest obstetrical and gynecologic services in New Jersey, and this latest recognition follows our 2019 inclusion by Leapfrog among 20 percent of hospitals nationwide recognized for fully meeting their quality and safety standards on key maternity quality measures.”

“Safety is at the core of everything we do to guide our expecting parents through a healthy pregnancy and a rewarding labor and delivery experience,” said Khalid Sawaged, DO, FACOG, Chairman of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. “Just as Newark Beth Israel continues to meet and or exceed national safety and quality metrics, we have built a program that does better than benchmark in key maternity quality measures.”

In 2015, RWJBH established the RWJBarnabas Health OB Collaborative to assist health care providers by instituting evidence-based protocols to address the rising concerns of maternal health. The collaborative brings together the top minds in obstetrics care across the RWJBH system and takes a multidisciplinary team approach by actively engaging physicians, nurses, and support service leadership.

Best Maternity Care Hospitals showcases an elite group of hospitals from across the country,” said Nancy Cooper, Global Editor in Chief of Newsweek. “These facilities stand out for the care they provide to women and families, and for giving babies a strong start to life. Particularly in these uncertain times, we are honored to share this list of top-ranked facilities with Newsweek’s readership.”
