The new same day surgery center offers privacy, comfort, and convenience.
When it comes to surgery, everyone wants high-quality, efficient care. With same-day surgery, patients can leave the hospital within 24 hours. To improve the patient experience, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Somerset recently relocated the Same Day Surgery Center to newly renovated space on the third floor. "The Center provides greater access and convenience for patients—and enhances their privacy and comfort,” says Anthony Cava, President and Chief Executive Officer at RWJUH Somerset. Th e Center was designed to be highly convenient. Parking in the hospital garage is free, and patients can easily access the Center by taking the North elevator near the hospital’s main lobby. Registration takes place in the Center instead of the main lobby
A private space
The new Center also affords patients plenty of privacy. For instance, patient bays have three solid walls and a curtain. In addition, patients are brought to the Operating Room via a private hallway, which connects the Same Day Surgery Center to the Operating Room. Safety is another key advantage: In the event of an emergency, patients are already at the hospital, where expert care is available immediately.
Patients’ families can wait for loved ones in a spacious, bright area, which features two skylights that were part of the hospital’s original operating suites in 1925. Complimentary coffee, tea and light refreshments are available. A patient/ family liaison updates families on the status of their loved one’s surgery, when they can see him or her, and when they can talk with the physician.
RWJUH Somerset physicians perform more than 6,000 surgeries every year. A variety of procedures can be performed in the Same Day Surgery Center, including vascular, urological, gynecologic, orthopedic (hip and knee), spine, plastic, podiatric and bariatric (weight loss). RWJUH Somerset has been designated a Center of Excellence in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation (SRC). The SRC recognizes providers who deliver top-notch care. The hospital has also received The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for total knee and hip replacement surgery, meaning it meets the organization’s rigorous standards for delivering high-quality, safe care.
