H. Richard Alexander, MDMonmouth Medical Center is pleased to announce that H. Richard Alexander, Jr, MD, FACS, Chief Surgical Officer at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, has been appointed Regional Director of Surgery for Monmouth Medical Center (MMC).

In this new role, Dr. Alexander will have broad responsibility for strategic planning and coordination of surgical services at MMC, as well as other RWJBarnabas Health (RWJBH) facilities. He will work to institute and promote multidisciplinary surgical oncology programs, recruit and retain new, high-quality surgical or allied faculty and create alignment between the oncology programs at MMC and Rutgers Cancer Institute with respect to clinical services and research and educational activities.

David Sharon, MD, Chief of Medical Oncology at Monmouth Medical Center and Medical Director of the Leon Hess Cancer Center, notes that the partnership between MMC and Rutgers Cancer Institute gives patients access to additional therapies and treatment options, as well as national leaders in surgical oncology such as Dr. Alexander. “Dr. Alexander brings to us exceptional surgical expertise, and helps to assure our patients have access to the most advanced treatment options including complex surgical techniques,” he said.

Dr. Alexander currently serves as Chief Surgical Officer for Rutgers Cancer Institute and as a Professor with the Department of Surgery, Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, and completed his surgical residency at Walter Reed Military Medical Center. He also completed fellowship training in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he was an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Fellow.

Following completion of his fellowship, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps and served as a staff surgeon for the Navy from 1977 to 1991. Dr. Alexander also served as a surgeon for the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) Warren G. Magnuson Clinical Center, where he led the Surgical Metabolism Section for the Surgery Branch and served as Deputy Director of the Center for Cancer Research for NIH’s National Cancer Institute.

Prior to joining Rutgers Cancer Institute in 2017, Dr. Alexander served as head of surgical oncology for the University of Maryland Medical Center. A board-certified surgeon, he is a Fellow of the American Surgical Association and American College of Surgeons. He also is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Association of Endocrine Surgeons and Society of Surgical Oncology.

Dr. Alexander’s vast clinical and surgical expertise combined with his oncology leadership experience make him highly qualified for this critical new role.
