Just because the temperature is dropping outside doesn’t mean you need to move your exercise indoors. Proper clothing during exercise can help keep you safe and comfortable. When choosing proper exercise clothing, consider the following:
- Dress in layers. You can always remove layers, but once you're out there exercising, you can't add them.
- Avoid heavy cotton layers that absorb and retain water. This can increase the amount of heat your body loses as you exercise. Perspiration clinging to cotton can cause you to become cold during your exercise as well.
- Always check the temperature before heading outside. A wind-chill factor below -20°F is dangerous.
- Keep your head, hands, and feet warm.
- If the temperature falls below your comfort level (usually around 0°F), warm the air you inhale by wearing a scarf or mask over your nose and mouth.
