Tips for Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain
Studies have shown that the average American gains five pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Don’t let that happen to you by following these easy, simple tips over the holidays:
Don’t skip meals leading up to a holiday meal or party. It’s understandable that you wouldn’t want to show up to a meal or party already having eaten, but eating a light snack beforehand can help you avoid overeating.
Use a small plate, that way you can avoid overeating, even if you fill it up.
Make sure half of your plate is vegetables.
Share dessert with someone. Especially if you have your eye on more than one treat, ask someone to share two items with you, and that way you get a taste of more than one thing without eating an entire serving.
Turn your drinks into spritzers. Whether it’s wine or cranberry juice, fill half your glass with seltzer or sparkling water to cut back on calories from those beverages.
Bring your own side dish – and make it a healthy one.
Have your workout planned for the following day, and stick to the commitment.
If there are kids at your holiday party, run around and play with them for 15-20 minutes to get your heart pumping and calories burning.
