Eating while on vacation can be a challenge. Airports, hotels, or highway rest areas are often stocked with overpriced and unhealthy options. No matter how or where you travel, with a little planning, you, too, can keep eating healthily.
- Consider packing non-perishable snacks in your bag. These include: trail mix, whole or dried fruit, freeze dried vegetables, nuts (packed into pre-portioned snack bags), nut butters, whole grain pretzels or crackers, instant oatmeal, or snack bottles.
- If you are traveling via the airport, consider looking for these snacks: part-skim mozzarella cheese sticks; whole grain sandwiches with lean meat, vegetables, and mustard; salad with lean protein; vegetable soup; fat-free latte; fruit cups, or pre-cut vegetables.
- When you are eating out at restaurants, focus on items that state they are grilled, steamed, broiled, or baked, compared to fried or sautéed. Other options include salads with lead protein, broth-based soups, or oatmeal and eggs. If you do want to indulge in a comfort food – just be mindful of portions.
