As a health care organization, we recognize when our patients need some guidance with their health, and we’ve made great strides in taking care of the planet, too. Earth Day is April 22, and RWJBarnabas Health is proud that our system has added some green elements to the organization.
Gardening and growing your own vegetables is not only great for the environment and your health, but it’s a satisfying accomplishment. In addition to Earth Day, April is National Garden Month, and what better way to celebrate both days than enjoying a spring breeze while planting something hearty for the planet? We’re called the Garden State for a reason – and since we’re ranked #12 in the greenest states in the US, maintaining a garden is the perfect way to celebrate both days.
The Beth Greenhouse at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center is one of our constant endeavors to enhance the lives of others through the environment. The facility’s sustainable hydroponic greenhouse boasts locally grown, high-quality lettuce, herbs, and seasonally-rich vegetables that produce thousands of pounds of nutrient-abundant fare each year. The hydroponic method of the greenhouse is beneficial for both the grower and the consumer as it doesn’t use any soil – therefore utilizing no resources – and occupies less space.
When it comes to the environment, every little bit helps, and each small effort we put into saving the planet adds up to a significant purpose. From planting a tiny garden or ditching plastic straws for a stainless steel – let’s do our part to help Mother Nature – not just for Earth Day, but every day.
