What Do the Kidneys Do?

The kidneys are responsible for sorting the body’s waste products and balancing the body’s chemicals, such as electrolytes, minerals, and other fluids. Every day, quarts of blood are filtered through the kidneys to remove urine and transfer it to the bladder. Kidney and bladder conditions are common, as there are several disorders that can interfere with the kidneys’ ability to perform their various bodily functions.

You may not be aware you have kidney disease, because it usually does not have symptoms in the early stages. You may start to notice these symptoms as the kidneys start to fail:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Flank pain near the kidneys
  • Insomnia and/or fatigue
  • A “metallic” taste in the mouth
  • Muscle twitches and camps
  • Swelling in the feet and ankles
  • Persistent itching
  • Shortness of breath

If you’ve noticed these symptoms, there could be several reasons for it. Discuss the possibility of kidney disease with your doctor if you have consistently encountered any of these symptoms.

Do I Need to See a Nephrologist?

Once the kidneys have gradually lost their ability to function, chronic kidney failure occurs as the bodily fluids and waste build up, leading to serious health problems. This occurs once the kidneys have ceased to function properly for more than 3 months. When kidney function is significantly impaired, your nephrologist will prescribe renal replacement therapy, such as dialysis or evaluate you for a kidney transplant.

The following associated diseases may lead to an increased risk of kidney disease:

  • Diabetes
  • Immune system diseases
  • HIV/Aids
  • Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
  • Frequent urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Kidney inflammation
  • Polycystic kidney disease
  • High or low blood pressure
