Complementing the James and Sharon Maida Geriatrics Institute at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center are the Geriatric Emergency Medicine (GEM) Unit, created to meet the more complex needs of seniors in emergency care, the Acute Care for Elders (ACE) Unit, an inpatient unit utilizing an interdisciplinary approach to collaboratively develop a patient-centered care plan.
Our multidisciplinary team also includes Physicians, a Nurse Practitioner, social worker, pharmacist, Patient Navigator, all who specialize in the care of seniors and are available to accommodate the needs of patients as they transition from inpatient to outpatient care. Our dedicated clinical team works with families to design a care plan that meets the specific needs of each patient.
Primary and consultative services are available for older adults suffering from:

- Decline in mobility, changes in gait and falls
- Memory loss and confusion

Geriatric Social Work Services
Our Social worker is available to provide supportive counseling to patients and their families regarding caregiver stress and coping with the emotional challenges of aging. Additionally, our social worker can provide information and referral services to age-related agencies to the community at large.

James C. White Manor offers medical care for the elderly. Geriatrician Suganthini Umakanthan, MD, is available for all aspects of medical care, including the evaluation and treatment of falls, dementia, loss of mobility, incontinence, constipation, depression, weight loss, and medication problems.
James C. White Manor is a widely recognized program designed to provide assessment and primary health care for adults 60 and over. Total health care on an outpatient basis enables the patient to live independently at home and to enhance his or her quality of life.

Home Friend Program
The Home Friend Program at the Center for Geriatric Heath provides FREE light chore services to qualified seniors, age 60 and older and disabled adults, age 18 and older.
