Screening
The American Cancer Society recommends that all women over the age of 40 have regular breast exams and mammograms. The frequency and specific age of these screenings depends on risk factors for breast cancer, such as personal and family medical history.
Screening may include:
- The documentation of your personal and family medical history
- A physical examination
- Radiological studies, such as mammography and breast ultrasonography
- Genetic testing
Diagnosis
Most women who undergo screening will be healthy and not have to use any of our other services. If, however, your diagnostic screening finds something suspicious, we stand ready to help you. This will involve meeting with one or more specialists from our team.
Breast Navigator
This highly-trained individual will meet with you immediately after a suspicious finding, and will be available to guide you throughout your entire breast care process. Our navigator can help find answers to your questions and steer you through the sometimes confusing maze of further diagnosis and treatment.
Breast Surgeons
If indicated by your screening, a board-certified breast surgeon will meet with you. Services breast surgeons perform include:
- Fine-needle aspirations of palpable lumps
- Surgical biopsy
- Mammogram and ultrasound-assisted excisional biopsy
Board-Certified Radiologists
These professionals specialize in breast imaging and evaluation of imaging studies. The services they perform include:
- Mammography (digital & 3D Tomosynthesis)
- Breast ultrasound
- Breast MRI
-
Stereotactic or ultrasound-guided diagnostic procedures including:
- Cyst aspiration
- Fine-needle aspiration
- Mammotone core biopsy
- Biopsy results within 24 hours
Pathologist
The pathologist examines your breast tissue by conducting:
- Cytology slide examinations
- Oncotype DX Assays
High-Risk Patients
If you are at higher risk for developing breast cancer, we maintain a registry for identification, monitoring and followup. You are considered high risk if you have one or more close relatives with pre-menopausal breast cancer, two or more close relatives with post-menopausal breast cancer, or other conditions such as cystic disease.
Second Opinion Program
If you are at high risk for breast disease or have been diagnosed with breast cancer, the Second Opinion Program offers you access to our compassionate, multidisciplinary team of breast specialists, who make evaluations and provide treatment recommendations.
