Chair and Chief of Service, Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery

Jean Anderson Eloy, MD, is the Chair and Chief of Service of the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center. He is Distinguished Professor and Vice Chair of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery; Distinguished Professor of Neurological Surgery; and Distinguished Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He is currently the Co-President of the New Jersey Academy of Otolaryngology/New Jersey Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery. He is currently the Co-President of the New Jersey Academy of Otolaryngology/New Jersey Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery.

Throughout his career, Dr. Eloy demonstrated a thirst and proficiency for research, education, and excellence in patient care. His contributions to the fields of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Neurological Surgery include over 480 journal articles, over 450 peer-reviewed articles, 6 books, and 46 book chapters in the subfield of Rhinology, Endoscopic Sinus and Skull Base Surgery. He has also contributed over 750 scientific presentations at regional, national, and international otolaryngologic and neurological surgery meetings, as well as over 410 invited lectures and oral presentations. His research topics encompass a wide area of the fields of otolaryngology, neurological surgery, and ophthalmology, and include endoscopic and open sinus surgery, minimally invasive endoscopic skull base surgery, malpractice in otolaryngology, as well as studies of gender disparities in otolaryngology and other surgical specialties. Dr. Eloy has also started a successful fellowship program in Rhinology and Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery, the only such program in the state of New Jersey.

Dr. Eloy is a member of the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Admission Committee, the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School University Physician Associates board of directors, and is involved in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery resident training.

Dr. Eloy has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including the prestigious Triological Society Eastern Section Vice Presidential Citation, which he received twice; the Edward J. III Physician Excellence in Medicine Award; the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Distinguished Alumnus Award; and the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center Physician Excellence in Healthcare Award. He has also been the recipient of two Golden Apple Awards for excellence in teaching, as bestowed by students from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Student National Medical Association Visionary Award, given to faculty and staff members that students believe have helped them in their advancement as physicians.

2016 Triological Society Eastern Section Vice Presidential Award

In January of 2016, Dr. Eloy was the recipient of the prestigious Triological Society Vice Presidential Award. This award was presented by Dr. Soly Baredes (Chair of Otolaryngology at Rutgers NJMS) during the Triological Society Combined Sections Meeting, in Miami, Florida. This award is given by the Triological Society Section Vice president to an exemplary individual that had significantly impacted their life and career in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.

2016 Golden Apple Award Winner (excellence in teaching)

In March of 2016, Dr. Eloy was the recipient of the Golden Apple Subspecialty Award from the medical students of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. This constitutes Dr. Eloy’s second Golden Apple Award. He received this distinction previously in 2013.The Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Golden Apple Awards ceremony is held each year for students to celebrate the outstanding people who have enhanced the medical school experience at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School

2016 Edward J. Ill Physician’s Award®

On May 4^th 2016, Dr. Eloy was the recipient of the prestigious Edward J. Ill Physician’s Award®. Dr. Eloy became the youngest recipient of this lifetime achievement award by many years. The Edward J. Ill Excellence in Medicine Awards® are awarded annually to honor those exemplary physicians and leaders whose dedication to patient care, education, research and public service have significantly impacted the delivery of health care in New Jersey and around the nation. The Awards program supports the Excellence in Medicine Scholarship Fund in recognition of a need to support health care education in New Jersey.

The Edward J. Ill Physician’s Award® which began in 1939 is presented annually to one New Jersey physician who merits recognition for distinguished service as a leader in the medical profession and in the community.

The awardee receives a “Joint Legislative Resolution” by the Senate President, Assembly Speaker, and All Members of The Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey.

2016 Faculty of the Year Award

On May 25^th 2016, Dr. Eloy was honored with the distinction of clinical faculty of the year. This award which is presented by the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School Faculty Organization honors outstanding accomplishments in the areas of research and clinical service, provides recognition for ground-breaking research, new and innovative clinical methods, and high impact publications. This award also honors Dr. Eloy’s extraordinary service to Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and its faculty.
