Expert Oncologists in Small Cell Lung Cancer Care

Also known as oat cell cancer, small cell lung cancer (SCLC) makes up about 10 to 15 percent of lung cancers. This type of cancer tends to grow and spread faster than non-small cell lung cancer and thus tends to respond well to chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Small Cell Lung Cell Cancer Symptoms

Small cell lung cell cancer symptoms may include:

  • Fatigue
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Coughing up phlegm or mucus
  • Coughing up blood
  • Swelling of the neck or face

Small lung cell cancer symptoms may be similar to those caused by other medical conditions. Still, it is important to see your doctor as soon as you begin experiencing symptoms. He or she will ask you how long you have been experiencing symptoms as well as other questions that will help figure out the cause of your problem.

Small Cell Lung Cancer Treatment

Small cell lung cancer treatment requires a multidisciplinary approach. This means different types of doctors work together to create a patient’s treatment plan. Small cell lung cancer treatment options may include:

  • Chemotherapy. This is the primary small cell lung cancer treatment option because of how quickly the disease spreads. Drugs are used to destroy cancer cells, keeping them from growing, dividing and making more cells.
  • Immunotherapy. Boosts the body’s natural defenses to fight cancer.
  • Radiation therapy Uses high-energy X-rays to destroy cancer cells.
  • Surgery. Removal of the tumor and some healthy surrounding tissue during an operation.

Small cell lung cancer treatment options are chosen based on the type and stage of cancer, potential side effects of treatment, the patient's personal preferences and overall health.

Small Cell Lung Cancer Prognosis

The general 5-year survival rate for patients with small-cell lung cancer is 7 percent. It is important to note that survival rates and small cell lung cancer life expectancy depend on several factors, including the disease stage. Patients with localized small cell lung cancer, which means cancer has not spread outside of the lung, have an overall 5-year survival rate of 27 percent.
