Dr. Goldstein had everything covered and reviewed with me every possible scenario. Not only did Dr. Goldstein bring my hematologist Dr. Lee back in, he also had a representative from the surgical tool that he would be using onsite during the surgery.
In early 2021, Ellen Ferry of Marlboro began experiencing pain in her leg. After a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) clot was discovered, she received care from Alfonso C. Ciervo, MD, affiliated with Monmouth Medical Center as well as RWJBarnabas Health Medical Group hematologist Patrick C. Lee, MD, affiliated with Community Medical Center, who placed a stent and cleared the clot in her leg. Ms. Ferry was released from the hospital with blood thinners and was on the road to recovery.
Yet one month later, the unexpected happened. Ms. Ferry began to hemorrhage and experience heavy vaginal bleeding. She headed directly to another area hospital. “My hemoglobin was low, I was severely anemic and needed several blood transfusions. Something was very wrong,” she said.
After unsuccessful treatment to stop the bleeding, Ms. Ferry reached out to her trusted OBGYN provider of over a decade, Steven Goldstein, MD, of the Combined medical group of RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Health, located in Freehold and affiliated with Monmouth Medical Center.
A Comprehensive Plan of Action
“Dr. Goldstein helped to develop a plan immediately. I called over the weekend and he was able to walk me through the next steps, noting that I needed a biopsy and to go to the operating room at Monmouth Medical Center. For the first time I felt I could breathe a sigh of relief, knowing I was going to be in good hands,” Ms. Ferry said.
By the time she had arrived to Monmouth Medical Center, Ms. Ferry needed two additional blood transfusions due to blood loss. While the biopsy was fortunately negative, Dr. Goldstein identified a large fibroid, requiring a myomectomy, or surgical removal of the fibroid, as well as an ablation, a procedure to remove a thin layer of tissue that lines the uterus. The procedure was high-risk, and if unsuccessful, would have resulted in an emergency hysterectomy.
A Life Changing Recovery
“Dr. Goldstein had everything covered and reviewed with me every possible scenario. Not only did Dr. Goldstein bring my hematologist Dr. Lee back in, he also had a representative from the surgical tool that he would be using onsite during the surgery,” Ms. Ferry explained.
The surgery was a success. Ms. Ferry experienced immediate relief following the procedure to remove the fibroid.
“I am over two months out from the surgery now and feel so much better. I am so grateful that I reached out to Dr. Goldstein and trusted him with my care. He had everything set up to go as smoothly as possible and did such an outstanding job.”
