When Herb R. learned he had an enlarged prostate and bladder stones, he knew that he had to act quickly before his condition worsened. "My business requires frequent travel and I didn't want to take a chance on my health," says the 73-year-old Egg Harbor Township resident.
Herb's local urologist suggested traditional or "open" surgery which typically requires a large incision, week-long hospital stay and long recovery time. Herb didn't like this option and took matters into his own hands. Through his online search he found Dr. Savatta at NBIMC, an accomplished robotic surgeon who told Herb he was a candidate for a robotic partial prostatectomy. With a few small incisions, Dr. Savatta removed Herb's prostate which was 12 times the normal size, along with seven bladder stones, that were as large as a baseball when combined.
Herb went home the day after his procedure and was back to work just three days later. Herb no longer experiences difficulties with his urine stream – a common side effect of an enlarged prostate – and is as active as ever.
