Eric Handler, DO, FACEP, Chairman of Emergency Medicine at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center (formerly Saint Barnabas Medical Center), joined the hospital as an attending physician in the Emergency Department in 2005. Prior to being named Chairman in 2021, he had held several positions in the Emergency Department, including Medical Director of Operations in (2017-2020); Associate Director (2013-2017); and Medical Director of the Rapid Decision Unit (2009-2013). He is board certified in Emergency Medicine.
Prior to joining the hospital, Dr. Handler spent several years at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC), Newark, NJ. After completing his residency in Emergency Medicine at NBIMC, during which he served as chief resident, he has remained on staff as an attending physician in the Emergency Department. Dr. Handler received his undergraduate degree from the University of Florida and was awarded a doctor of osteopathy from Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed an internship through the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey at St. Francis Hospital and Christ Hospital.
Dr. Handler’s areas of interest include Emergency Department operations and patient throughput, palliative care, clinical excellence and staff safety and well-being.
In addition to serving on the RWJBarnabas Health Sepsis Steering Committee, he is active with numerous Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center initiatives, including the Multidisciplinary Quality Review and Utilization Review Committees.
He has continuously been named a Top Doc by New Jersey Monthly magazine.
