Christian A. Engell, MD is an Infectious Disease Specialist at RWJBarnabas Health Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBIMC), Newark, New Jersey and a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at NJMS. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. In 2006, he completed his Internal Medicine residency at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. He went on to pursue a fellowship in Infectious Disease at New York University. The focus of his research is broad but often focused on underserved populations.
Dr. Engell is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Infectious Disease. His clinical interests are HIV, Transplant Infections, Infection Control, Antimicrobial Stewardship, and Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality Improvement. He has been practicing at NBIMC since 2008. From 2013 to 2023, he served as Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency at NBIMC. In 2023, he was appointed as the Chief Academic Officer at NBIMC. He is also currently serving as Interim Infectious Disease Division Director.
Dr. Engell takes particular pride in fostering diverse teaching programs in a setting of academic excellence.
