Children’s Specialized Hospital’s Center of Excellence for Chronic Pain and FND promotes the wellness of adolescents and young adults with chronic pain and functional symptoms by teaching strategies to manage those symptoms and encourage functional activity. The COE is typically for children and adolescents who have significant difficulties with daily function. The goal of the COE is to improve participation in daily activities, increase school attendance, and decrease use of assistive devices.
Our specialized team focuses on treating conditions such as, but not limited to:
- Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome (AMPS)
- Chronic Abdominal Pain
- Chronic Migraine Headaches
- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
- Fibromyalgia
- Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
- Functional seizures
- Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS)
Our Individualized Approach
This evidence-based program may include outpatient or inpatient services with the focus on regaining function. Each patient is evaluated to determine their individualized care plan. Treatment may include:
- School re-entry support
- Psychology
- Physical therapy
- Occupational therapy
- Aquatic therapy
- Patient education
- Social work
- Recreational therapy
- Child life therapy
- Parent education
The focus of the therapies in the COE are to manage pain through:
- Promoting independence in mobility, self-care, endurance and strengthening activities
- Symptom management through academic participation, recreation, and peer interaction
- Diagnosis specific education about effective coping strategies
- Exposure to environmental challenges
- Developing and managing a daily routine
