A Premier Cancer Center

Oral cavity cancer, also called oral cancer, begins in the mouth and can affect the lips, mouth and throat. These can include oropharyngeal cancer, which occurs in the part of the throat just behind the mouth and includes the base of the tongue, soft palate, tonsils, and side and back wall of the throat. Oral cancers also encompass those that are in the nasopharynx, which is the part of the throat above the oropharynx behind the nose, as well as in the larynx (voice box) or hypopharynx. While not cancerous, there are also several tumors that can develop in the oral cavity—we can treat those, too.

While most oral cancers are squamous cell carcinomas that line the mouth and throat, there are other types of oral cancers such as salivary gland carcinomas, lymphomas and verrucous carcinomas.
