May 6, 2024 – In late April, RWJBarnabas Health’s The Institute for Nursing Excellence hosted a Peri-Anesthesia Conference at its Eisenhower facility in Livingston, NJ, where 44 nurse attendees experienced lectures, simulation, and certification review for the CAPA and CPAN examinations, organized and presented by Swapnil Shah, DNP, AGACNP-BC, Clinical Educator, Critical Care, Center for Professional Development, Innovation and Research (CPDIR), The Institute for Nursing Excellence, Jessica Stanford, MSN RN-BC, Cooperman Barnabas; and Mary Koch, MSN, RN, NPD-BC, CNOR, Administrative Director, Perioperative Education, CPDIR, The Institute for Nursing Excellence.

This conference was intended to be a hands-on learning session, only in person, but more importantly allowed RWJBarnabas Health’s PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit) and Same Day Surgery nurses the opportunity to network and personally meet their colleagues from other sites across the system. The nurses who attended came from as far south at Community Medical Center in Toms River to as far north as Jersey City Medical Center in Jersey City, NJ.

The robust agenda included Phase I and II Management; Review of Anesthesia Medications for Adult and Pediatric populations; Fluid and Blood management and an interactive session with Tom Moore, Employee Assistance Program, RWJBarnabas Health, providing Care of the Caregiver. The morning ended with 5 hands-on stations of mini-code, debriefing, ventilator management, A-Lines, and Airway management all provided by system interprofessional colleagues. The conference also included a a mini certification review with tips, tools, and techniques.

A special thanks to the presenter: Michael McLoughlin, DNP, CRNA, Newark Beth Israel; Monica Bianco, B-HA, RCP, Newark Beth Israel; Sarika Patel, BSN, RN, CCRN, RWJUH New Brunswick; Thomas Moore, LCSW, BCD, RWJBarnabas Health EAP Services, Aileen Danguilan, MSN RN, CNOR, Trinitas Regional Medical Center, and Richelle Powell, MSN, RN, Jersey City Medical Center. The Institute for Nursing Excellence will hold a similar conference in the Fall of this year.
