Curriculum

NBI EM Residency Group

The department considers the essentials of residency training to include bedside teaching and scholarly inquiry. Our residency offers an environment that will help to develop these essentials not only through valuable patient encounters but also through a formal didactic curriculum, skills/procedure labs, simulation, case, and interdisciplinary conferences. Our academic teaching day is held on Wednesdays and consists of 5 hours of protected time free from clinical responsibilities. We provide resources to help with academics, self-study, and board review. Our morning report takes place 4 days a week and consists of oral board-style cases and patient encounter presentations for both adults and pediatrics.

Throughout ED months, shifts are split between the main and pediatric EDs. During the first year, our residents have an introductory “boot camp” orientation consisting of ultrasound, simulation, and procedure labs as well as orientation shifts in our main ED. First-year residents rotate for 6 months in the ED. First-year off-service rotations feature MICU, Trauma, Anesthesia, Ultrasound, JCMC, Ob-Gyn, and Pediatrics.

Second-year residents rotate for 7 months in the ED. Highlights include off-service rotations in the NBI CCU and PICU, Trauma, a 2-week elective block, EMS, as well as toxicology at the New Jersey Poison Control Center at NJMS in Newark.

Third-year residents rotate in the ED for 9 months. The third-year curriculum boasts an off-service rotation at the Cooperman Barnabas Neuro ICU in Livingston, New Jersey where the ED residents oversee the unit. Third-year residents also have one month of selective separated into two, 2-week rotations and an RDU/Teaching rotation which gives our PGY-3s an opportunity to experience observation medicine in our own RDU at NBI and further experience in teaching by assisting the PGY-1s and 2s with procedures in the ED.

The Newark Beth Israel Emergency Medicine Residency is one of the oldest and most established residencies in the state of New Jersey. The curriculum is scrutinized annually and it undergoes minor alterations, taking especially into consideration our resident feedback and recommendations. Below are the most updated rotations.
