Specialties
MFM - work alongside our Perinatologists and ultrasound technicians at Monmouth Medical Center’s Antenatal Testing Center. We have the opportunity to practice performing ultrasounds including nuchal translucency, Level 2, cervical length and growth. We also assist performing tests such as amniocentesis and chorionic villous sampling. Residents routinely review and discuss current antepartum patients in the hospital and develop management plans.
REI - work at a local practice alongside several Reproductive Endocrinologists to learn the basics of reproductive and infertility. We are able to participate in office procedures such as egg retrievals and/or in-vitro fertilization and perform hospital procedures such as diagnostic laparoscopies and/or myomectomies. Residents also learn how to educate patients on options during infertility consultations.
URO/GYN - work with local Urogynecologists in both hospital and office settings. We assist in performing in-office procedures including urodynamic testing, cystoscopy and Urgent PC. Throughout the week, we have several surgical cases including DaVinci robotic assisted hysterectomies and/or pelvic floor surgeries.
GYN/ONC - work with a Gynecologic Oncologist to perform in-patient consultations and DaVinci robotic assisted surgeries at two RWJ Barnabas hospitals. We also lead monthly GYN/ONC clinic days at the Women’s Wellness Center and treat a variety of complex malignancies including cervical, endometrial, vulvar, ovarian, etc.
Monmouth Medical Center Family Planning Clinic / Cyclo 360 - residents work in a Title X Monmouth Medical Center Family Planning Clinic on campus providing all aspects of reproductive health. Residents attend Family Planning Clinic during their Gyn rotation and are trained in the use of all forms of contraception. Residents attend Family Planning Clinic during their Gyn rotation and are trained in the use of all forms of contraception by a certified Complex Family Planning physician.
Didactics: Each morning at sign out our junior residents present all patients on Labor and Delivery and Antepartum. An in-depth morning report involves discussion of patient management and analysis of FHR tracings with input from program faculty and private physicians for Performance Improvement.
A core resident didactic lecture series presented by Dr. Massaro and other faculty members supplement the experiences gained through rotations. Following the lecture series, an ACOG practice bulletin or a review of recent literature on a particular topic is presented and discussed by a resident. Residents and medical students attend this weekly lecture series every Wednesday during protected didactic time while Certified Nurse Midwives and faculty cover the resident service.
A preoperative and pathology conference is held every Wednesday. Preoperative cases and pathology findings from the previous week are discussed with supervising faculty.
In addition to the traditional M&M and Journal Club meetings, residents attend regular OB-Pediatric, Near Miss and Performance Improvement conferences plus the following throughout the year:
Cutting Edge: Annual conference for the past 33 years on various OB-GYN topics providing continuing medical education to attending staff, CNMs, RNs, residents and students held mid-summer each year.
OB Essentials and GYN Necessities: A two-day annual conference taught by the residents to present high yield topics to medical students, interns, and nursing staff. This conference qualifies as continuing medical education for several hospital employees and showcases the residents as teachers.
ALSO: Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics, is a critical care skills workshop led by Dr. Massaro for incoming interns. This course teaches our interns how to tackle high risk situations they may encounter throughout residency. This training certifies our residents for up to 3 years. All Laborists, DODs, and residents as well as many of the CNMs and nursing staff are ALSO certified.
The Linda Grunin Simulation Lab and Learning Center- Monmouth University and Monmouth Medical Center entered into a joint venture to create a multimillion dollar state of the art simulation lab. Dr. Massaro, Monmouth University and MMC faculty frequently conduct simulation programs for staff education.
OB Critical Care Course: The Critical Care Obstetrics program is a two day course which offers specialized training for the high risk and critically ill or injured obstetric patient. Topics and drills include Obstetric Hemorrhage, Hypertensive Emergencies, Sepsis and Maternal Cardiac Arrest. Certification is for 3 years, through the Society of Critical Care Medicine. The program is offered twice a year.
