Program’s History: Over 130 Years of Tradition and Growth in the Care of Women
For more than 130 years, greater than any hospital in Central New Jersey, Monmouth Medical Center has provided leadership in the care of women. “The keystone of our society and the keystone of our Department’s mission.”
Right from its birth over a grocery store on Broadway in Long Branch, NJ, Monmouth Medical Hospital was destined to become a leader in Women’s Health. In the early years, it attracted specialty trained OB/GYN physicians, who in the 1940s started the region’s first OB/GYN residency program. Naturally, the state’s first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and one of the first in the nation followed. The region’s first Maternal Fetal Medicine sub-specialists were attracted to the now Monmouth Medical Center. In the early 1980s one of NJ’s first fellowship trained Reproductive Endocrinologists established MMC leadership in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgical programs and MMC was soon to see the expansion of services to Gynecologic Oncology and Urogynecology.
An affiliate of RWJBarnabas Health, the Leapfrog A-rated center delivers approximately 6,000 babies annually in its High Risk Level III facility, more than half the babies born in Monmouth and Ocean Counties. MMC enjoys one of the lowest Cesarean Section rates in the US at 16.9%. The OB Rapid Response Team comprised of residents, nurses, Laborists, and Doctors of the Day with other support staff provide a level of safety 24/7/365 rarely found in a community teaching hospital.
