Clinical Trials Offer the Latest Prostate Cancer Treatments

View Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials

A clinical trial is a research study aimed at evaluating a treatment option.

Through prostate cancer clinical trials, researchers seek to determine if new treatment options are safe, effective and better than the standard treatment.

New treatments for various types and stages of prostate cancer can be evaluated.

These treatments may include:

  • Medications
  • Combination treatments
  • New approaches to radiation therapy or surgery
  • New methods of treatment

Patients who participate in prostate cancer clinical trials may receive new treatment options before they are available to the public. Patients are encouraged to talk to their specialists about the pros and cons before joining a clinical trial.

Who Can Join a Prostate Cancer Clinical Trial?

Not everyone is a candidate for prostate cancer clinical trials. Each trial has specific eligibility criteria, and criteria vary amongst trials.

Factors may include:

  • Type of prostate cancer
  • Stage of prostate cancer
  • Previous prostate cancer treatment
  • Other health conditions

Patients collaborate with their specialists before participating in a clinical trial. In some cases, diagnostic tests may be needed to determine if patients meet clinical study criteria. Speak to your doctor to see if you are eligible. View our available prostate cancer clinical trials.

What Are the Different Phases of Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials?

There are four phases of prostate cancer clinical trials.

Each phase answers different research questions:

  • Phase 1. This phase seeks to find a safe dosage, decide how new treatments should be given, and observe how new treatments affect patients.
  • Phase 2. This phase seeks to determine the effect of treatment on specific types of cancer.
  • Phase 3. This phase is used to compare new treatments with standard treatments, potentially resulting in new standards for care.
  • Phase 4. This phase seeks to assess the long-term safety and effectiveness of a new treatment.

How Do I Decide If a Prostate Cancer Clinical Trial Is Right for Me?

A clinical trial may offer an alternative when standard treatments are not desired or effective. For some patients, the chance of better results may be achieved with a clinical trial. This is always an individual decision that should be made after consulting with a specialist and participating in informed consent.

During informed consent, a specialist:

  • Describes all of your treatment options
  • Explains everything that is required of you to participate in the clinical trial, including visit frequency, associated tests, treatment schedules, and costs
  • Lists all of the risks associated with the new treatment
  • States the purpose and goal of the clinical trial

After informed consent, you should have a clear understanding of the differences between the new treatment and the standard of care. You should also feel comfortable with all clinical trial requirements.

For patients with unresponsive cancers, clinical trials offer additional treatment options to control the spread of the disease, eliminate cancer and improve your quality of life.
