Apr 29, 2024 May 2024: Mental Health In A Changing World

Caterpillar and butterfly

Our world is constantly changing. Within the last decade, we’ve undergone significant changes such as technology, social media, the 24-hour news cycle, violence, climate change acceleration, the economy and, of course, COVID-19.

For many of us, some of these changes can feel out of our control and may be difficult to accept and process.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and we turn our attention to addressing the challenges of maintaining good mental health in a rapidly changing world. As the American author, John Maxwell once said, “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.”

There are many ways we can grow in the face of uncertainty. We can develop coping skills that help us process changes, prioritize our mental well-being, and accept the situations in life that we can’t control.

Find out how to build your personal Coping Toolbox, from Mental Health America. Many of the tools should be familiar to you, like gratitude, relaxation exercises, acts of kindness, and other ways to relieve stress
associated with change.

If you find you’re continuing to have difficulties coping with change, One Source EAP can help with 24/7/365 access at 800-300-0628. All calls are strictly confidential.

Tips for Nurturing Your Mental Health

While all things may change around us, we can thrive by focusing on nurturing our mental health.

  1. Maintain a routine – Routines provide a sense of normalcy
  2. Get a good night’s sleep – develop good sleep hygiene
  3. Get moving – Strive for 20 minutes of light exercise each day
  4. Go Offline – Reduce anxiety from 24/7 news cycle and social media drama
  5. Nourish Your Body – The mind/body connection is very strong
